The most widely used road to Galicia is the A-6 motorway (Autovía del Noroeste - coming from Madrid) reaching Lugo and A Coruña, continuing to Santiago de Compostela (vía AP-53). Arriving on the A-6 motorway, upon reaching Benavente take the detour towards the A-52 motorway (Autovía de las Rias Baixas) which takes you to Ourense, Vigo and Pontevedra.
Access from Portugal is generally via the AP-9 motorway that also reaches Pontevedra and Santiago de Compostela.
BY FERRY
Although you cannot travel directly from the UK to Galicia by ferry, you can get pretty close by taking the ferry from Plymouth to Santander (
Brittany Ferries ) or Portsmouth to Bilbao (
P&O Ferries ).
Santander is in the region of Cantabria on Spain's northern coast. It lies between Galicia's neighbour Asturias and the Basque country. Bilbao is a bit more faraway but still worth the trip following all the coastline from the Basque country to Galicia.
